Welcome to the Explore Lincoln City Explorience Program.

This is a series of free, hands-on learning events led by local experts. Not only will you enjoy a richer experience during your visit, you'll also be eligible to get some "members only" benefits.

The Explore Lincoln City Explorience program is designed to add some local knowledge to the experiences people can have in Lincoln City. Topics range from clamming to bird watching to exploring tide pools, and more are added throughout the year. It's a fun way to get a little extra out of each visit.

Cascade Head Biosphere
Cascade Head Biosphere Explorience programs will meet in Knight Park at 10:30 AM on program days.

How to prepare:
Conditions on the Oregon Coast change by the minute, so be prepared by bringing:
Comfortable shoes (Hiking boots or Waterproof boots recommended but not required)
Water
Sunscreen
Light jacket

*This Explorience contains a number of areas that are off trail with potentially wet or uneven surfaces.

SAFETY & STEWARDSHIP
The Biosphere Region is a protected wildlife sanctuary - to help preserve this delicate habitat, hunting, camping, fires, bicycles, removal of foliage, and dogs are not allowed (even on a leash). The presence or scent of dogs in a habitat such as the Cascade Head Biosphere Region, may force wild animals to leave their homes, both temporarily and permanently.

Hiking
Join Lincoln City Parks & Recreation for an adventure through local open spaces. Lace-up those hiking boots for a guided tour of some of the best trails in Lincoln City. From sweeping ocean views to lakeside forests, you'll be amazed at what you can find right in the heart of the city.

Bird Watching
Bird-lovers can flock to this Explorience hosted by the Lincoln City Audubon Society to learn about coastal birds and their natural habitat. This bird-watching adventure starts with a brief overview with our local experts and is followed by a guided walk at a variety of locations in and around Lincoln City. You'll witness an abundance of wildlife such as egrets, osprey, and pelicans, along with countless other majestic creatures.

Bird Watching Exploriences begin at 9 AM and last for approximately two hours. This program is free, and registration is not required. Locations for each date are listed below.

Clamming
Guided by our local expert, travel to the mudflats of Siletz Bay at low tide to search for purple varnish clams during our Clamming Exploriences. Our local expert will provide an overview of Oregon’s clamming regulations, harvest methods, identification, cleaning, and cooking techniques. Armed with expert information, enjoy the hunt, and see how many clams you can dig up.

Each clammer is allowed a limit of 72 Purple Varnish clams to take home. Clamming Exploriences last approximately one to two hours. This program is free, and registration is not required.

Crabbing
Enjoy the bounty of Siletz Bay during our Crabbing Exploriences. Before heading out to the shore to toss a line, meet our local expert for an overview of Oregon’s crabbing regulations, harvest methods, identification, cleaning, and cooking techniques. Then you'll hit the sand and try it for yourself.

Each crabber is allowed to crab with up to three devices. We recommend a folding crab trap for Siletz Bay crabbing, which can be done right from the shore. Crabbing Exploriences last approximately one to two hours. This program is free, and registration is not required.

Bait (chicken legs work well)

Tide Pools
Learn about the fascinating creatures living in our rocky intertidal pools from local experts during our Tide Pool Exploriences. Our guides will take you on a tide pool tour to identify and explore local marine life such as sea stars, anemones, urchins, and other colorful creatures. Tide Pool Exploriences last approximately one hour. This program is free, and registration is not required.

Practice good tide pool etiquette by watching your step walking on sand or bare rock whenever possible, keeping sea life disturbance to a minimum, and never take anything home.

Our local expert will guide you along the beach helping you find and identify coastal treasures, explaining our unique coastal geology along the way.
